Blackberries are fairly difficult to eliminate because they scratch, and the leaves are almost impermeable! Their branches can grow to 3 or 4 metres in length, and when they reach the ground again, they produce roots where they touch the soil in order to develop more new shoots. To eliminate blackberries, first you have to cut away the branches using a hedge trimmer, whipper-snipper or secateurs. Once this is done, wait for young leaves to grow back - these are more susceptible to weedkiller than mature growth. Then you can use Roundup PowerMax or Roundup Advance Concentrate(diluted as per instructions for tough and woody weeds) on the young leaves, in order to destroy the blackberries right down to their roots.

For a more effective strategy, apply the weedkiller in the autumn when the sap flow is slowing - this ensures that the weedkiller is taken right down to the roots. In the spring (when the sap rises again and the blackberries are dead) use a rake to remove them completely. Bag up and place in the household rubbish bin for collection.
