Boneseed

(Chrysanthemoides monilifera ssp monilifera) Boneseed has been declared a weed of national significance. It is a widespread environmental weed in the high winter rainfall areas of southern Australia and is particularly invasive in coastal and bushland areas. Originally from South Africa, it was introduced to Australia in the mid 1800s as an ornamental garden plant. Bearing bright yellow, daisy-like flowers in dense clusters from late winter to spring, this shrub is often confused with Bitou Bush (C. monilifera ssp rotundata), which occurs further north. Boneseed’s leaf margins are toothed, while those of Bitou Bush are generally smooth. It is widely disseminated by animals and birds passing the indigestible seeds and also by water movement.
