Weed tips

  • Weeds emerge in many, often awkward or inconvenient, places as the soil warms in Spring. Spot spray with Roundup but avoid spray drift on to surrounding ornamentals. Avoid disturbing the soil and keep a good depth of mulch over beds to reduce the potential for other weeds to emerge.

Garden maintenance in October

  • Prepare for Summer by adding 8-10cm of mulch over garden beds now
  • Remove spent flower heads from spring bulbs, leaving the leaves intact for at least six weeks (preferably allow them to die down naturally) and feed with Osmocote Garden Beds to promote good bulbs for next season
  • Sow seeds and plant the first of the summer vegetable crops, including tomatoes
  • Cut back straggly evergreens to encourage new growth from base
  • Reseed bare patches on the lawn if you didn’t do so last month
  • Plant evergreen trees and shrubs
  • Stake tall growing perennials
  • Cut old foliage from ornamental grasses and ferns
  • Clean the pond, start feeding summer foods to your fish and plant new aquatic plants
