Weed tips

  • If the garden beds where you intend planting spring flowering bulbs and annuals are infested with weeds, or the remains of summer annuals now past their best, spray with Roundup on a dry, still day. Planting can be started a week or two later.

Garden maintenance in March

  • Autumn is an ideal time to plant evergreen shrubs and trees. The soil is still warm enough to ensure rapid establishment before the weather cools. Water them if the weather is dry
  • Plant seedlings of winter vegetables
  • Direct seed Sweet Peas on St Patrick’s Day (March 17). Old wives’ tale or fact – it seems to work
  • Lift and divide overgrown clumps of summer perennials now starting to die off
  • Fertilise the lawn with Lawn Builder Regular; use a spreader and be sure to apply at exactly the rate recommended on the pack. Re-turf or re-seed bare patches
  • Prune shrubs that have flowered over the summer months
