Weed tips
- Summer weeds can quickly get out of hand if not controlled regularly. Use Roundup to keep them in check. Now is also a good time to tackle woody weeds again, such as blackberries, lantana, ivy and bamboo. Check for any regrowth since last sprayed in Spring, and re-treat if required.
Garden maintenance in December
- Mulch fruit crops to retain moisture
- Ensure birds have access to water
- Hoe regularly on hot days to make sure weeds dry up and die
- Give most hedges a light trim
- Liquid feed cucumbers, tomatoes, zucchinis and other vegetables and herbs every couple of weeks
- Plant autumn flowering bulbs
- Fill any gaps in beds and borders with seasonal annuals
- Top up mulch is required
- Move hanging baskets and outdoor containers to cool spots where they will be shaded from hot sun. When winds are hot and strong, take down baskets so they won’t dry out too rapidly
