(Asparagus Aeuthiopicus) A perennial shrub or scrambler from eastern and southern Africa, Asparagus Fern grows from thick tuberous roots formed on rhizomes. It grows readily from pieces and has spread mainly via dumped garden waste. Its seeds are also spread by birds and water. It has become a persistent weed in urban bushland and readily colonises extensive areas, particularly around old house sites. It is still sold as an ornamental in southern States. It produces tiny flowers of white to pale pink in heads during spring and summer. These are followed by red berries containing black seeds in late summer to autumn.
